INTRO:

punk rock needs to be SILLY! sometimes the most subversive thingy you can do is be CUTE! choosing to be SOFT and CUDDLY despite the vast cruelty of this world! there's nothing more PUNK than that! you can be bright and colorful and cutesy as well as crusty and grungy as fuck, you don't have to choose one or the other! and fuck anyone who tries to make you pick. but it's not just about dressing the part. cutesycrust values are also hella important. it's more than just an aesthetic -- it's a lifestyle. and so, i bring you... THE CUTESYCRUST MANIFESTO

HISTORY:

i came up with this term just today, january 6th 2025. but i mean like i've been dressing like this for years lol. i originally coined the term "kawaiicrust" before my bestest friend rachael made me realize what i do is far brighter and more vivid than normal kawaii fashion and that a far better more descriptive term would be CUTESYCRUST. and then i immediately started writing this manifesto and here you are reading it at some point in the future lol

SORTA LIKE:

the definitive example i like to give of CUTESYCRUST is someone wearing the grungiest punk vest you've ever seen over a really pretty bright floral dress. but really any mixture of bright and cheery and colorful, with grungy and punky and crusty, will suffice. this could be anything your heart desires: like, maybe, for instance, some really cute hot pink leggings underneath a beat up black denim skirt covered in pockets and patches that've been sewn on with waxed dental floss. or a hot pink bucket hat you've sewn fuzzy pink cat ears and a buncha punky patches onto. or a pastel children's school backpack you've covered in studs and spikes. the possibilities are truly endless!

VALUES

genuineness. sweetness. kindness. being willing to be emotionally vulnerable. mixed with a punk-tinged distaste for the brutal status quo of crushing capitalism and the like. soft where you can be, hard where you need to be. cutesy yet crustie. exemplary action: carrying a plushie with you everywhere you go for comfort or just fun, because fuck society for saying that's immature. it's like that lyric goes: "hard to be soft, tough to be tender"
