VANTA RAINBOW BLACK'S DIY PUNK PATCH MAKING GUIDE
0. PROLOGUE
okay fuck it. it's nearly midnight and this edible is hitting so
it's been like eight years since i had this idea and STILL nobody's written a comprehensive guide about this so fuck it i'm finally gonna write one with the techniques i use like i always said i would all those years ago
1. SUPPLIES
okay you're gonna need paint (and maybe something to thin it depending on what kind you use). and paintbrushes. and fabric (denim recommended). and an iron. and an ironing mat or board. and more fabric. and, of course, some ideas. and imagination. all that good shit
2. FABRIC
i highly recommend denim for this. it's perfectly sturdy and holds paint well. but any fabric you have on hand will be okay for some amount of time. so what you do first is you cut. cut a square or rectangle or circle or whatever you want, really. just make sure to leave some slack, like half an inch or so, to fold over later so the edges don't fray. so you cut the shape and then it's time to paint!
3. PAINT
if you're using acrylic paint you wanna mix it with some acrylic medium to avoid flaking and chipping. mix half acrylic paint and half acryilic medium to get the right consistency. if you're using fabric paint you can skip this step. fabric paint is better overall i think but it costs more so. do what your budget or craft store blindspot allows
so... paint! you can do this however you want, really. if you're just starting out and unfaithful in your own artistic abilities -- start with a simple word or slogan! it doesn't have to be anything fancy. if you really wanna get hardcore with it you can look into cutting out cardboard stencils! or just work your way up freehanding or tracing stencils! use regular old fashioned retro vintage wood pencils to protoype designs!
the possibilities are truly endless in this step. glow in the dark paint is a thing! get really silly with it. have fun
3. LOCKING IT IN
after you're done painting wait at least 24 hours for your creation to dry. then, it's time to heat set it! so it doesn't wash off in the rain lol. that's where the iron and ironing mat or board come in. ironing mats are cool, i didn't learn about them until recently. the more affordable option!
and now... EMPTY YOUR IRON OF WATER. TURN OFF STEAM.
take another bigger scrap of denim and place it atop your painted patch. set the iron to maximum and iron each and every way -- moving the iron constantly -- for five to seven minutes. give the denim and yourself a break between every minute! just give it your best guess as to exactly how long the total needs to be. and then, MAKE SURE TO LET IT COOL DOWN!!! this shit's gonna be hot af, you don't wanna touch it right away. go chill out and smoke several bowls and maybe by the time you remember it later it'll be done
3. FOLLOW-THROUGH
okay so when you're sewing the patch on later be sure to fold over the edges to avoid fraying! unless you're into that sorta thingy ofc. i recommend WAXED dental floss. you can't really go wrong with it. it's abundant, cheap, and holds incredibly well. i've never had anything i've sewn with it fall off!!! in all my years of DIYing up punk clothing and such. if you wanna add a more professional flair or just have more color selection you could opt for upholstery thread like the stuff i sell is made from. but learning to thread that in comparison to waxed dental floss is a bitch. either way, i recommend double threading for maximum sturdiness!
4. CONGRATS!
hell yeah you did it! go you!!! :3
5. EPILOGUE
